Are bad choices and good choices equally likely to have negative consequences?

People have to make plenty of choices in everyday life: eating, buying, learning, and playing. Generally, choice creates future from its results and effects. Thus, many people believe that making a “good choice” is one of the most important tools for better life. In fact, however, there is no “good choice” before result comes out. In other words, “good choice” and “bad choice” are equally likely to have negative consequences.
First, the Second World War was started by Germany in 1939. After the First World War, German dictator, Adolf Hitler decided to intrude Western Poland after contract with USSR. Since the results of the First World War were impossible to Germany, Hitler thought that the Second World War was the best choice for Germany with strengthening. In 1930s, German people thought that their choice to intrude Poland was the best one. However, the result was terrible. Germany lost their international power again, and German people should endure worse lives. Since German people did not understand international situation, they could not foresee the results, so their choice, which they thought as the best, was actually wrong choice.
Second, ancient Korea, Chosun, was a country, which made later modernization. With the influence of Heungsun Daewonkun, the father of the king, most commoners hated and proscribed western influence. Nevertheless, Chosun’s exclusion, which considered as the best choice, made a threatening result: Japanese invasion. With modernized weapons and ideology, Japan showed up a strong military power, so Chosun finally gave up to Japan.
In general, people try to make “good choice” in their lives. However, there are no “bad choice” and “good choice”; therefore, every choice has equal danger and opportunity. In conclusion, making choice is not important but the effort to make the choice, as a good decision, is important.

During the last centuries of the classical era, 100C.E to 600C.E, there were two big dynasties-Han and Sui, and there were no remarkable political and cultural changes. Of course the gap between Han and Sui was the chaos, which had some changes, but not that big changes.

Han, the stronges and longest lasting empire of China, existed from 206B.C.E to 220C.E. As the long period of Han, Han Empire created a powerful, efficiently governed empire, especially under the emperor Wu Ti. Han had huge armies, which absorbed all Inner China, some parts of Mongolia, Southeast Asia, and Manchuria. The economy was strong because of improved agricultural techniques, and monopoly on silk. Han also had largely decorative art. The artistic styles often reflected the precision and geometric qualities of the many symbols of Chinese writing, but the painting was much less developed. Han dynasty was very outstanding and excels, but declined at 220C.E. Economic slump, corruption of government, and outside invaders were the made Han to collapsed.

There were no any strong dynasties after Han collapsed until 581C.E. In this anarchy, Buddhism was spread to China more than Han period. China alternated between periond of political unity and fragmentation. Finally, Yang Jian founded Sui dynasty to reestablish China. Sui patronized both Buddhism and Taoism. There was 1400mile long linked major rivers, Grand Canal. It linked Yellow and Yangtze River. The Grand Canal became essential to move goods between regions. Government power was centralized, and Three Departments and Six Ministries system officially instituted. The land equalization system, initiated to reduce the rich-poor social gap, resulted in enhanced agricultural productivity.

Both Han and Sui had high productivity of agriculture, and cetralized strong government. Religion is different. Han prefered Buddhism and Confuscianism, but Sui patronized Buddhism and Taoism. Developed cultural, and political system made both Han and Sui strong. Chinese people’s positive attitude to accept new technology, such as Grand Canal, and silk probably made Han and Sui had developed culture and political system. Although there were no bkg changes, both had oustanding position in the world.

To countries, ideologies are very important. Each country has own policies and ways to control the people. From 1945, there were some conflicts between other ideologies such as capitalism, Communism, and totalitarianism. Those fighting became a big tragedy and wars in the world. In addition, a country, Korea, is not unified even today, because of the Cold War. Conflicts about ideologies made a miserable tragedy, division of a country during about sixty years.

The Cold War was begun at 1945 by USSR and USA. Before the World War 2, capitalism and Communism allied and fought against totalitarianism, however, after World War 2, the situation was changed. Capitalism and Communism started to fight each other to gather their power. Cold War has opposite meaning of Hot War. Hot War means the wars with guns and arms. In other words, Cold War did not use arms. Instead of using arms directly, USSR and USA used other countries. Both countries, USSR and USA did not fight each other because they were afraid of atomic bomb, but fought through weak countries such as Korea and Vietnam. This is the reason that the war is called “Cold War.”

Just an avarice made some countries became divided and hated each other.

The Cold War was ended with collapse of USSR’s Communism. America helped many countries in financial problem, which came from World War 2. That was on of the reasons that many countries became capitalism. The War was over, but the problem was serious. Germany and Korea were divided in two parts each other, and small countries’ economic, and social effects were terrible. The Cold War made the world confusing. Confusion could become a cause of World War 3, the atomic bomb war. Of course there were some positive effects of Cold War. After Cold War, countries in Europe allied and united one another to restrain America. Some poor countries had growth because of help of America, capitalism. Besides, the world started to become pluralism.

In the history, there were plenty of wars for power and gold. People fight with killing, beating, and destroying, but the Cold War did not use arms. Even Cold War did no fight cruelly, the impact and effect were huge. Cold War’s agony is continued even today. Germany unified few years ago, and Korea is still in divided country. North Korea and South Korea have different ideologies, and they are in armistice during about 60years. Different ideologies such as capitalism and Communism made Cold War begin, and Cold War caused weak countries’ fighting, division, and some positive effect such as UN.

Today, most countries are capitalism, but few countries such as North Korea are not. In my opinion, “Cold War,” a war without weapons, still exists in the world, and the war should be over with world people’s efforts.

Ⅰ. Prevail Scenario

According to Joel Garreau, the author of the book “Radical Evolution,” there are three scenarios for the world’s future: Heaven, Hell, and Prevail. Heaven scenario is the idea that future situation will be better and better with highly developed science and technology. Hell scenario, in contrast, is telling that our future is not bright but dark because highly advanced technology will bring distorted form of future.

Among three scenarios, in my opinion, Prevail scenario is most reliable and realistic. Future’s situation is unpredictable. If people do well, it will be better in future, and if people do badly, it will be worse in future. This is the idea of Prevail scenario.

Since 8000 B.C.E., the period that humankind started to live in the Earth, people experienced lots of variations and alternations to adapt in changeable surroundings. For example, Agricultural Revolution is one of the most innovative events in the world history. People started to settle down to grow plants, of which can eat, and made little society in form of civilization. Besides, Medieval Ages’ Scientific Revolution offered a crucial opportunity to accomplish true world trade, including the New World, America.

Through plenty of events such as Agricultural Revolution, Scientific Revolution, and Industrial Revolution, humankind and society grew. Today, besides, we are face to new wave, the fluent information, scientific experiments, and expansion of technology. In other words, world future is up to our hands, according to Joel Garreau’s third scenario, “Prevail Scenario.”

Ⅱ. Global Issue, Racism

In the late 15th century, European countries started explore to find shorter trade routes, which could convey goods including spices. In the middle of the way, Christopher Columbus found the new world called America in 1492. Since the land was big and fertile, the men from Europe started to take the land from native Indians. In those lands, mass cultivation called “plantation” was formed. In the plantation system, lots of labors were needed, but there were few labors in America because most of native Indians were killed by disease such as smallpox or battle between European. As the solution of this problem, Black people from Africa were flown in to America. The influx of black population enabled the sugarcane plantation and tobacco plantation, but white people, who owned the huge farms treated black people as dogs under the name of “slaves.” From 1804(Haiti) to 1888(Brazil), slaves in America or Latin America were released from harsh suppression, but the word, “racism” remains as one of the most serious global problems in the world. Still today, racial segregation occurs in employment, housing, government, and education.

With expanding globalization, the demands for more skilled workers have led to increased demand toward foreign workers. In contrast, many people should endure hard time to get opportunity in foreign countries, because the immigration policies became tighter and tighter. Thus, many skilled workers such as well educated doctors cannot get better chance to work in better place.

There are other racial hardships to get better opportunity in foreign countries.

First, living in a new country is daunting, especially when the cultural differences are great. As each country has own culture, living in country with different cultural surroundings is not easy work. In addition, racial discrimination is crucial. Most native people of the new country such as United States have old idea that darker people are less civilized than brighter skin color people.

As globalization is in progress, racism became more important global problem to solve. Every ethnic of people should meet and cooperate to make better future, but racial segregation and oppression does not allow this. From the perspective of globalization, in my opinion, finding skilled people is more beneficial than protecting same ethnicity. Racial discrimination is in process to be moderation and mitigation, but we have to make more efforts to solve the racial problem for truly globalized one world.

From 16th century to present, racism has been a serious problem in the world in the form of education, government, housing, and employment. However, it is time to solve this problem for brilliant, developed future. In this globalized world, races cannot be a yardstick of judging people. In other words, the future development of our society and the world is accomplished when our antiracist movements are well evaluated.

Ⅲ. Charles Darwin’s Natural Selection

In the colonial era, Europe was dominated by Charles Darwin’s theory, “Social Darwinism.” Natural Selection, another name of Social Darwinism, was started in Europe. Darwin said that some individuals will survive and reproduce better environment. It explains that speciation in populations is the outcome of competition between individuals. Darwin believed that the struggle for natural resources let individuals with certain traits to succeed more frequently, which makes more “civilized populations.”

Although Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection was broad picture of organisms’ instincts, some took Darwin’s theories to imply that some races were more civilized to have right to govern interior one. Using this theory, for the prominent example, European people started to try to justify their racial oppression, racial segregation and colonization.

Ⅳ. Conclusion

Whenever science and technology developed society, people face to some problems to solve. In 14th century, for instance, trade from East to West caused the Scientific Revolution, the beginning of exploration. European exploration brought economic growth-the positive effect-, but also incurred racism, the negative influence. Also, Charles Darwin’s advanced idea, Natural Selection, became one of causes of racism. Although racial problem emerged in 16th century, it is today’s global problem to solve. Racial oppression and segregation are in amicable settlement.

As the example, racism tells, scientific and technological development incurs both positive and negative impacts. Thus, making solutions for the problems caused by advanced technology is human’s task. Our future is made by our own hands -Prevail Scenario. In other words, we, every human can create both desperate future and hopeful future.

The symbol of beauty, Han-bok

The symbol of beauty, Han-bok
There are many beautiful things in the world. Many people love beauty and want to be beautiful people. Beauty is always one of the most famous interests to people. By the way, People¡¯s interests about beauty made me think about real beauty. What is a symbol of beauty? First, I started to look for in Western countries. I found a lot of beautiful Western clothes, foods, and style of buildings, but I could not feel they are the symbol of beauty. I wanted to find the symbol of beauty, but finding the symbol of beauty is not easy. By the way, the thing that I want to find exists very close. The thing is a Korean traditional clothes, Han-bok. Of course there are many beautiful things in Korea such as tiled roofs, foods, and the Korean under- floor heating system. However, when I was a little girl, I saw Han-bok and I fell in love with Han-bok because it was very pretty and attractive. I think this event is the beginning of love between Han-bok and me. However, many people-include Korean people-do not know about Han-bok. Therefore, I want to introduce Han-bok, the symbol of beauty. The thing that I searched is appearances of Han-bok, characteristic of Han-bok, Kinds of Han-bok, usage Han-bok in modern time and so on.

Appearances of Han-bok
Everyone can notice Han-bok if he sees Han-bok once because appearance of Han-bok is characteristic and scientific. There are many kinds of Han-bok, but the Han-boks, which were worn by commoners, are general. Men and women wore different Han-bok in ancient time. Men¡¯s Han-boks have similar appearance with Western suits. Men wore pants, shirts, vests, jackets, and outer coats. Appearance of pants is different from Western pants, because the bottom of Korean pants is narrow. Experts say this form-narrow pants¡¯ bottom-is very scientific because people must keep the lower part of body warm. Western pants¡¯ bottom is not narrow, so well ventilated. Therefore, people cannot keep the lower part of body warm. In contrast, the people who wear Han-bok can keep the lower part of body warm. Korean shirts are very thin and smooth. People adjust shirts by tying the strings. Vests and Jackets have buttons to adjust clothes and they are look like Western style clothes. Women wore underpants, skirts, and jackets. The appearances of women¡¯s Han-boks are different from Men¡¯s Han-bok of Western clothes. Underpants of Han-bok are thin and smooth like men¡¯s shirts and women¡¯s underpants are look like men¡¯s pants. However, women¡¯s skirts have very beautiful lines. The width of skirts is big and the length is long. Women wore skirts on the chests, so the length of Korean skirts is longer than Western dresses¡¯ length. Women¡¯s jackets are very short because women wore skirts on their chests. The jackets have strings instead of buttons, and the knot of strings is beautiful because strings are very long. Long strings make appearance of Han-bok sophisticated. Women also had outer coats, but the outer coats were for protection against the cold, different from men¡¯s outer coats. The colors of Han-boks were very bright and flash because people use grasses or flowers to make colors of Han-boks. Han-bok has very beautiful, fascinating appearances.

Characteristics of Han-bok
There are some characteristics of Han-bok. First, Han-bok has a long history. People started to wear Han-bok in the period of the Three States. Of course the trivial appearances were changed, but the general form of Han-bok was not changed. In other word, Han-bok has the spirit of Korea. Han-bok usually made of cotton, silk, or ramie cloth. In addition, people wore different Han-bok in each season. In summer, the cloths are usually ramie cloths or hemp cloths, and in winter, the cloths are silk and wool. The colors of strings or sleeves are symbol of status of women, but the form is similar. Although Han-bok needs many cloths, Han-bok is very light and easy to wear. The line of Han-bok is one of the characteristics of Han-bok. The line of strings showed the beauty of chastity, and the line of skirts looks like elegant. In addition, the width of Han-bok is big, so everyone can wear Han-bok and everyone looks good in Han-bok. Han-bok is comfortable to act because loose Han-bok does not bind people¡¯s bodies. Therefore, ancient Korean people wore Han-boks during they engaged in farming. Han-boks are economical clothes. People can wear Han-bok during long time, and because of width of Han-bok, people can wear if they get fat. In addition, if people wanted to change the colors of Han-boks, they can change the color because the colors are from nature. Thus, Han-bok is a very good and practical clothes that people should admit. (Scientific clothes)

Kinds of Han-bok
In ancient Korean society, there was a status system. Therefore, the people, who had other status, wore different form of clothes. Commoners and lowly people usually wore similar form of Han-bok, but royal people or nobles wore other form of clothes. Of course, noblewomen wore similar Han-bok with commoners, but noblemen wore other clothes when they were in palace. Royal people wore gay and colorful clothes. A king wore red clothes, which had a Chinese phoenix pattern. A queen wore a large skirt and huge wig. The wig was very big and heavy, so queens¡¯ necks got hurt a lot. Queens wore many accessories in their wig, and clothes. In addition, queens wore long jackets, which have gold foil patterns instead of short jackets. Queens¡¯ skirts are very large to prevent people approach to her closely. Court ladies, who serve royal people, wore simple clothes. There were any patterns on court ladies¡¯ clothes, and the color was not gay. Court ladies also had wigs, but the wigs are not big and there were no many accessories. Some court ladies did not have wigs because their statuses were low. Noblemen wore blue or red clothes according to their statuses. Eunuchs wore green clothes. According to this search, we can figure out that there were many kinds of Han-bok because of status system. (List of Han-bok)

Usage of Han-bok
These days, there are few people that wear real traditional Han-boks. Of course, in festive days, many people wear Han-boks but that Han-boks are not real traditional clothes. Traditional Han-boks are not comfortable to modern people, so Han-boks are made more comfortably in modern time. For example, modern Han-boks have rubber strings or buttons instead of fabrics. However, people cannot satisfy fixing Han-boks just for comfort, so ¡®improvement Han-bok¡¯ is formed. People make new designs. Improvement Han-boks are very sophisticated, so people usually wear improvement Han-boks. Recently, Han-bok designer, Lee, Young Hee make many pretty Han-boks, and make inroads into the world market. Therefore, there were many fashion shows about Han-bok, and many foreign people know Han-bok and its beauty. Improvement Han-boks have the beauty of elegance, splendor, and grace like traditional Han-boks, thus many foreign people notice the beauty of Han-bok. Many foreign entertainers such as Britney Jean Spears wear Han-boks because they know beauty of Han-bok. In my opinion, more beautiful improvement Han-boks are made, and I hope more foreigners notice beauty of Han-boks.

Conclusion
Han-boks have attraction, so if people see again and again Han-bok, Han-bok fascinates them. Therefore, I think Han-bok is the symbol of beauty and I am proud of Han-bok. These days, foreign people realize the real beauty of Han-boks, but Korean people cannot notice the real beauty of Han-bok. I am so sad about this reality. Han-bok is our clothes, culture, and beauty. Therefore, Korean people must know about Han-bok and try to make Han-bok worldwide beauty. In fact, I did not know the detail information of Han-bok, but collecting of information made me have a lot of knowledge about Han-bok. Whenever I found the information about Han-bok, value of Han-bok got bigger. I really hope that people know the value of Han-bok and love Han-bok. Moreover, I hope that Korean people realize wisdom of ancestor through the process of knowing Han-bok because our ancestor made Han-boks, which are scientific and fascinated. In my opinion, Han-bok is the symbol of beauty because of characteristic, and appearance of Han-bok, and I am waiting that everybody in the world admits the fact that Han-bok is the symbol of beauty. Then, I want to ask you a question. What is the symbol of beauty?

We are living with many people in the earth, and generally, we called our living place, “The World:. The world is our home, mother, and friend, but recently, I wonder if really it is. Everyone has a desire to have power or property, and some cannot control themselves. Those people make the world dirty. Therefore, our world is becoming worse and worse. Of course, there are developments in the world, but the world is becoming too dirty.

In the book, :Brave New World,” the whole world is crazy. Between people, there are gaps and status. Women do not need to have a baby in the womb. Instead of in a mother’s womb and love, babies are raised. Therefore, there is no ant love or emotions. People are living without emotions and like machine. To them, today’s common peiople, who have emotion, desire, or thought, are strange and uncivilized things. In my opinion, “the brave new world” is a really rotten world because the people are like machine without any emotions.

We can see some parts of the book in the real world. Actually, people are losing their emotion for desire of money or power. For instance, ther are some people who kill their family because of money. I think it is not really different with the brave new world/ If there is no emotion in the world, people will become like in the brave new world. Killing, denounce, beating, and scorning are found easily in the real world. If this condition does not vanish, the world will be really crazy. Besides, the people in that crazy world cannot become ordinary.

In my opinion, the book “Brave new world” shows us our future world. In the crazy world, we usually say obtining power and money is success. However, the important thing to remember is that money or power makes people crazy. If we want not to become like the book, we have to think what is the most important thing in the world-love or money. Therefore, I really hope there will be no world like the book in the future. People need to learn the importance of emotion and appreciate about current situations.

¡®Every cloud has a silver lining¡¯. It is the saying that John Milton¡¯s. It means that if there is some bad happening, good happening will be arouse soon. Is this story has the saying ¡®Every cloud has a silver lining¡¯? Of course, people can see that this story has the saying. However, I think there is no ¡®silver lining¡¯ in this story. Pip had an opportunity to go London because of anonymous supporter. Many people probably think this part is the ¡®silver lining¡¯. However, Pip became a vain person after the opportunity. Is it a ¡®silver lining¡¯? No, it is not a silver lining. Although going London could be a good opportunity, the result was terrible. Pip lost his innocence and became a snob. It cannot be considered ¡®silver lining¡¯.

Before Pip obtained the opportunity, his life was not horrible. I think his life was common and happy. He had good brother, he could eat well, and he played with nature. It was not a horrible life, so it cannot be considered to ¡®every cloud¡¯. Of course, he was not a rich and he had a hysterical sister, but it was not a horrible life. It was a common life and it cannot be considered to ¡®every cloud¡¯.

Opportunity and surroundings are an inseparable relation and they are very important things. However, more important thing is effort. Efforts are rewarded in many forms. If you are in trouble or there is some bad happening, do not wait ¡®silver lining¡¯. If you do not do anything to overcome problems, the ¡®silver lining¡¯ never comes. ¡®Silver lining¡¯ is made by your efforts.

Terrorists and dictators

Everyone wants to live in idealistic society. There are no fight, no greed, and no hate in idealistic society. People usually call idealistic society, Utopia. Everyone is same and there is no discrimination in Utopia. By the way, there are some factors that make society worse. Many people think that dictators or terrorists hinder to make idealistic society. However, I do not think dictators and terrorists are disturbers because they make a process that becoming idealistic society, and there are the examples that dictators and terrorists make better society.

Terrorists and dictators make processes that changing the society better. Why dictators and terrorists exist? The reason is terrible society. Terrorists and dictators need to change society better so they terror or dictate. If the society is idealistic, and there are any dictators or terrorists. In other word, dictators and terrorists are not the beginning or factor of terrible society. If there is no terrible society, there are no dictators or terrorists. Therefore, dictators and terrorists are the process of changing society better.

There are some examples that dictators and terrorists make better society. First, the president of Korea, Jeong Hee Park was a dictator. When he was the president, the economical situation of Korea grew up a lot. Of course there were some complaints, but the society was comfortable to live. Second, Seung Hee Cho, who killed a lot of people became a cause of changing American’s thoughts. American realize that they must care about isolated people who live in America. There are two examples that dictators and terrorists make better society. According to these examples, dictators and terrorists are not the factor of terrible society.

I want to live in idealistic society. I want to be happy and comfortable. I think if I want to live in Utopia, dictators and terrorists are must exist to prevent the society become terrible. Ideal means perfect. Dictators and terrorists can make perfect society through get rid of terrible factor of society. In my opinion, we must change the thought that the dictators and terrorists are bad people. They are sometimes good.

Language screen

Do yor know all the words in the world? The words in the dictionary is not all the words in the world. There are more words such as ‘Shut up’ which are not in the dictionary. People usually use such words and get most people can understand. However, some people cannot understand those kinds of words, and this situation is an dxample of how a ‘Language screen’.

I had some experiences of language screens. When I was in the library, a man yelled to me ‘Shut up.’. When I heard that shout, my feeling was terrible. In contrast, a woman called me and said ‘Be quiet, please.’. Then, I could be quiet for her. ‘Shut up’ and ‘Be quiet’ have the same meanings, but they also have other feelings. In my experience, therefore, the words which have the same meanings but do not have same feelings is a language screen.

Between foreigners and ourselves, we can undergo the censershipof a language screen. For example, Korea and America have different language, so we cannot understand each other if we talk in each our native languages. Of course, we can use ‘body language’, but there are limitations to boky language. Thus, this limitation can be called language screen.

In my opinion, a language screen is a serious problem in the present. Today, the world is becoming one global nation. Thus, we must converse well. I think language screens hinder conversation. Therefore, we must find methods to become more friendly without langruage screen.
